GLBT: visual artists
Introduction
Welcome! GLBT artists have made defining contributions to painting, sculpture, architecture, design, and photography, as you can see on this page honoring their diverse achievements.
In 2007, I added dozens of new entries, artists' full birth/death dates and nationalities, plus additional photos. This list began as a background resource for a series of museum outings. New! Thanks to James M. for writing, in spring 2008, with additional GLBT painters, architects, photographers and more — to be added when time permits in the coming weeks.
James M. Saslow's Pictures and Passions: A History of Homosexuality in the Visual Arts is an outstanding survey of GLBT art, and social life, from antiquity to the present. Here are works at the Metropolitan Museum of Art referred to in the book:
Riza-i Abbasi, Two Lovers (Met # 50.164 Saslow colorplate 12) - Hegesiboulos Painter, Symposium Scene (Met # 07.286.47 Saslow illustration 1.9)
- Roman Warren Cup (Met # L.1991.95 Saslow illustration 1.24)
- Caravaggio, Musicians (Met # 52.81 Saslow illustration 3.17)
- Pompeo Batoni, Portrait of a Young Man (Met # 03.37.1 Saslow illustration 5.4)
- Rosa Bonheur, Horse Fair (Met # 87.25 Saslow illustration 5.10)
- Picasso, Gertrude Stein (Met # 47.106 Saslow illustration 6.2)

Following are only highlights of glbtq.com's extensive offerings, which expand frequently. Their indispensable site also includes resources for literature, film, music, social sciences and more. To keep this list to a manageable length, I have omitted all "Subjects in the Visual Arts" entries: links to those topics are included within the appropriate articles. Also, I have arranged historical articles chronologically (e.g., Pre-Stonewall comes before Post-Stonewall), while all other entries are alphabetical. "Art" refers to both painting and sculpture; archtecture and photography have separate sections.
